长征途中，红军生活非常艰苦，天天吃红米南瓜，开头吃几餐还觉得味道有点香甜，吃多了就觉得有点难吃，可是毛主席不搞特殊，仍和战士们从一个锅里盛饭。毛主席行军中唯一御寒的一条毯子，也不知用了多少年，上面的毛已基本掉光，差不多是一个麻袋片了。一天早上，毛主席的警卫员一眼看见他脚上穿的黑线袜子，已经洗成了又薄又稀的灰色袜子了。主席发现警卫员盯着他的袜子看，就把脚一伸，说：“这双袜子还是1929年下井冈山后你替我买的，已经换过两次袜底了，你看还是好的。不过再不能换袜底子了，袜面也太稀薄，经不起洗了。”主席一边说着，神情里还有些舍不得的样子。
