大庆石油会战初期，粮食定量低，职工们吃不饱，王进喜就叫老伴儿把玉米面炒好，装在袋子里带在身边，吃饭时就抓把炒面充饥，有时干粮袋忘记带了，就借故走开饿一顿，从不吃井队的饭菜。对王进喜来说，饿上一两顿是常有的事。王进喜有严重的关节炎，上级领导照顾他，给他配了一辆吉普车，王进喜就用它来送料、送粮、拉职工看病，成了大队的公用车。这辆车工人、干部都可以用，唯独王进喜的家人不能用。就连王进喜的老母亲病了，还是王进喜的大儿子用自行车推着去卫生所看病。

In the early days of the Daqing oil exploiting campaign, the food ration was low and there was not enough food for everyone. Wang Jinxi asked his wife to fry the corn flour and put it in a bag which he always carried with him. When having meals, he often grabbed a handful of the fried flour to allay his hunger. Sometimes if he forgot to bring the bag with him, he would go away with an excuse rather than eat the food prepared for the drilling team. It was common for Wang Jinxi to skip the meal for once or twice. Considering Wang Jinxi suffered from severe arthritis, his superior allotted him a jeep. However, Wang Jinxi made the vehicle for public use from delivering materials and food to taking the workers to see doctors. Everyone in the drilling team, no matter workers or leaders, could use this jeep except Wang Jinxi’s family. Even when Wang Jinxi’s old mother was ill, Wang Jinxi’s eldest son took her to the clinic with a bicycle instead of the jeep.
