May 5 in the Chinese lunar calendar is a Chinese traditional folk festival with a long history known as the Dragon Boat Festival. According to the legend, it originated in memory of an ancient Chinese patriotic poet Qu Yuan. A big event during this festival is the dragon boat race, which often draws large crowds of people to the river banks to spectate. Dragon Boat Festival celebrations also include other folk customs, such as eating zongzi (a triangular or cone-shaped snack made of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves, some with fillings including pork, chicken, sausage and salted duck egg), drinking realgar wine and hanging wormwood on the door.

Dragon Boat Racing

It is said that dragon boat racing was initiated for commemorating Qu Yuan, a loyal courtier of the Chu State in the Warring States Period. Qu Yuan was exiled by the King of the Chu State, who lent a ready ear to people slandering Qu Yuan. Seeing the Chu State falling into decline, Qu Yuan, full of grief and indignation, jumped into a river and drowned himself on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. On hearing the news, people rowed to rescue him with all their might. Over time, the custom of dragon boat racing evolved to commemorate the death of Qu Yuan on this day each year. Today, dragon boat racing has become a popular physical activity.
