“袁老师，这是我们农场今年的新米。”

蒙蒙细雨中，冈比亚农民穆萨·达博站在湖南长沙已故袁隆平院士墓前，向“杂交水稻之父”致敬。

"Mr. Yuan, this is the new rice from our farm this year."

As rain fell, Musa Darboe, a Gambian farmer, stood before the grave of the late Chinese scientist Yuan Longping in Changsha, Hunan province, to pay his respects to the "father of hybrid rice".

6月11日上午，这位人生轨迹因一粒种子而发生改变的冈比亚农民终于如愿再次踏上了湖南的土地，见到了他思念已久的袁老师。

On the morning of June 11th, this Gambian farmer, whose life's course was altered by a single seed, finally returned to the land of Hunan as he had long wished, seeing the Mr. Yuan he had long yearned to see.

“袁老师，您的种子在冈比亚生根了，我们不再挨饿了。”达博说。“就像您说的，人就像种子，要做一粒好种子。”

"Professor Yuan, your seeds have taken root in Gambia. We are no longer hungry." Darboe said. "Just like you said, people are like seeds, and one must strive to be a good seed."

长期以来，冈比亚由于农业技术落后、机械化水平低以及小规模水稻种植，大米主要依赖进口。2018年，穆萨因父亲去世从美国回到了非洲老家，继承了父亲的农场，但迎接他的却是泥泞的未来。

Gambia used to rely heavily on imported rice, due to outdated agricultural technology, low mechanization levels and small-scale rice cultivation.

In 2018, following his father's death, Darboe returned to his African home from the United States to manage the family farm, only to be confronted by a future mired in difficulty.

没有任何技术指导的穆萨，第一年种植水稻就碰了壁。仅种植了3公顷，还是用“油桶打谷粒”的原始方式来收稻子。收获时正逢雨季，大量稻谷泡水发芽，损失惨重。

“我当时对水稻种植技术并不了解，而且冈比亚的农业机械化水平非常低，没有人教我怎么做，我甚至一度想放弃这一切。”

With no technical guidance, Musa hit a wall in his very first year of growing rice. He planted only 3 hectares and still harvested the grain using the primitive method of "threshing rice with oil drums." The harvest coincided with the rainy season, and vast quantities of rice were flooded and germinated, resulting in devastating losses.

"At the time, I had little knowledge of rice farming techniques. Moreover, the level of agricultural mechanization in The Gambia was very low. With no one to teach me what to do, I even contemplated giving up the entire farming venture."

幸运的是，中国农业专家黄智带领的隆平高科团队来到冈比亚，他们分享了耕种、收割及加工的技术。

当第一台插秧机开进农场时，穆萨兴奋着感叹：“这是我父亲那代人想都不敢想的奇迹。”

Fortunately, Huang Zhi and his team of experts from Yuan Longping High-Tech Agriculture Co arrived in Gambia. They shared their techniques, from plowing and planting to harvesting and processing.

When the first rice transplanter entered the farm, Darboe marveled at it, recalling that "this was a miracle my father's generation wouldn't have dared to dream of".

在中国援非农业专家支持下，生产从手工脱粒变为全程机械化，单产跃升至均产约7吨/公顷，是当地平均产量的2-3倍，短短5年时间，穆萨的农场从3公顷扩大到100公顷。

The transition from manual threshing to mechanization saw yields surge to an average of 7 tons per hectare — two to three times the average local yield. Over the next five years, Darboe's farm expanded from three hectares to 100.

“我必须把最深的感谢献给中国、献给袁隆平老师！”

穆萨将一幅色彩明丽的油画放到袁隆平墓前，“这是冈比亚第一座全机械化农场，我的农场。”

"I must offer my deepest gratitude to China and to Mr. Yuan Longping!"

Moussa placed a brightly colored oil painting before Yuan Longping's tomb, saying, "This is The Gambia's first fully mechanized farm—my farm."

“禾下乘凉梦”在地球的另一端生生不息。

"The 'Cool under the Rice' dream takes root and thrives on the opposite side of the globe."
