During the Long March, the Red Army lived a very difficult life, eating red rice and pumpkin every day. At the first meals, they felt sweet, but after eating too much, they began to feel unpleasant. Chairman Mao did not claim any privilege and ate the same food with the soldiers. There was a blanket that Chairman Mao had to keep out the cold during the Long March, but nobody knew how many years it had been used. The hair on the blanket almost fell out, and it looked like a piece of sackcloth. One morning, Chairman Mao’s security guard saw at a glance that the socks on Chairman Mao’s feet had been washed into a pair of thin and gray socks. Chairman noticed that the soldier was staring at his socks, so he stretched out his feet and said, “You bought this pair of socks for me During the Jinggangshan period in 1929. The soles have been changed twice, and it is still good now. But the soles can’t be changed anymore, the top of the socks is too thin to withstand washing.” The chairman said with a look of and reluctance to throw them away.
