During the War of Liberation, Chen Yi stipulated that his troops should not enter private houses of local people. Some comrades were concerned about what if it rained or soldiers were wounded and sick? Chen Yi insisted, “This order must be carried out unconditionally. No one is allowed to enter private houses, even the King of Heaven! This is a greeting gift we present to the folks here.” As the Liberation War in Shanghai ended, the locals opened their gates and surprisingly found that along the street sides and on the wet ground lying many Liberation Army soldiers in their yellow cloth uniforms on the morning after the cease of gunfire. Shanghai people were deeply shocked and touched by what they had seen.
